CHATEAU PENIN is situated on very localised gravel soils, between the limestone plateau and the marshland on the left bank of the Dordogne river facing Saint Emilion.

Only vines can grow on such very poor, hot soil. These conditions enable very concentrated and perfectly ripe grapes to be produced here.

This is a pebbly terrace dating from the quaternary era which was deposited there by the river. It is made up of red sand and round pebbles, which were shaped by their journey along the river from the Central Massive. The depth of this soil varies from 5 to 8 metres.
